Clan Ghost Bear Totem
Living in the arctic Southern Hemisphere of Strana Mechty, the ghost bear is a patient predator that waits hours, even days, buried in the snow, for its prey to come into view. When the moment is right, the massive animal strikes with such lightning speed and strength that the naked eye can barely see the ghost bear at all. The surface of the snow settles again and the only a faint bloodstain as evidence of the fierce and deadly battle.
Like its namesake, Clan Ghost Bear is a conservative hunter. Never hasty, the prevailing Ghost Bear attitude is "wait and see." When the Bear finally moves, the results are swift and often extreme. Once the Bear has its mind set on something, nothing can stand in its way. Such is the Way of the Bear.
The ghost bear of Strana Mechty is a truly awesome beast. Though similar in appearance to the polar bear of Terra's arctic region, the ghost bear is larger and stronger, some specimens having been recorded a standing more than five meters tall when reared up on their hind legs. Unlike the polar bear's fur, which shows a yellowish cast, the ghost bear's coat is pure white. Even the ghost bear's eyes and nose are a pale gray that appears nearly white, and its coloration makes the bear practically invisible against snow, even when running at full speed. Its size limits the ghost bear's ability to pursue its prey for any length of time, and so rather than running down its quarry, the bear lies in wait on the fringes of its prey's territory, using its keen sense of smell to locate likely hunting spots. The ghost bear then buries itself in the snow to enhance its camouflage, remaining completely motionless, often for days at a time. The bear apparently enters a state of semi-hibernation while awaiting a potential meal, conserving energy but remaining acutely aware of its surroundings all the while. The ghost bear takes its name from both its coloration and from its apparent ability to materialize from nothing.
Nicholas Kerensky chose this seemingly brutish animal as the namesake for one of his Clans for more than its physical prowess. He also admired the loyalty it showed its family; ghost bears mate for life and maintain a tenuous connection to their offspring, a trait almost unknown in the animal kingdom. Nicholas also believed that the ghost bear represented a strong respect for tradition. He characterized ghost bears as clinging stubbornly to their instincts, only reluctantly changing their habits and behaviors to adapt to environmental and situational changes. The ghost bear survives its apparent lack of adaptability with an extremely hardy constitution and high birth rate.
Like its namesake, Clan Ghost Bear has also survived, often in spite of itself, by virtue of its methodical persistence and the success of the Clan breeding program. The traditions of strength and stability on which Clan Ghost Bear prides itself can be traced back to its founders, the only married couple to help establish a Clan. The founders of Clan Ghost Bear receive equal reverence from it warriors, so much so that most believe that neither Sandra Tseng or Hans Jorgensson could have forged the Clan alone.
Possessions
Worlds: 43 (Clan space: 1 shared world. Inner Sphere: 42)
Before their relocation to the Inner Sphere, the Ghost Bears held considerable territory in Clan space. However, they now maintain only their enclave on Arcadia and the traditional posting at Strana Mechty; their remaining holdings were ceded to allies or lost to Trials of Possession. All other Ghost Bear troops and civilians have been relocated to their Inner Sphere occupation zone, which has been named the Ghost Bear Dominion. The Ghost Bears recently captured the Inner Sphere worlds of Leoben, Skandia and Radstadt in Trials of Possession against Clan Wolf.
Allies and Enemies
The Bears are a powerful but moderate Clan, and as such offend few and have worked along side almost every Clan over the years. However, the only Clan that could be termed a true ally is Snow Raven, who have worked with the Ghost Bears periodically for the last hundred years. The Ghost Bears' comparatively weak aerospace force is complemented nicely by the Ravens, who benefit from the Bear's exceptional Elemental force in battles where the two work together.
A powerful Clan always attracts rivals, and the Ghost Bears are no exception. Topping the list are the Hell’s Horses, who have a long-running border disputes with the Ghost Bears. One such conflict in the Golden Century resulted in the death of Kilbourne Jorgensson, arguably the most popular Ghost Bear Khan in history. The Ghost Bears have held a simmering hatred of the Horses ever since.
Also on less than sterling terms with the Bears are the Steel Vipers, with whom they just never got along, and Clan Wolf. The Wolf Clan enmity dates back to the Annihilation of Clan Wolverine and the fact that the Ghost Bears were denied the right to participate in the trial. The Bears let a Wolverine unit slip past them in spite, and have regretted it ever since. The scar of that incident is borne to this date by all Ghost Bear warriors, who also harbor a long-standing grudge against the Wolf Clan for failing in the honor of fully destroying the Wolverines when they had the chance.
Military
The Ghost Bear Touman centers on strength and speed, employing 'Mechs with powerful arrays of weapons, often to the point where armor and heat sinks are compromised. They use fast 'Mechs such as the Fire Moth to deploy their significant force of Elementals, the largest of any Clan. In fact, the Ghost Bears have deployed an entire Galaxy consisting solely of Elementals. Generally, Ghost Bear Clusters consist of two Stars of 'Mechs, one Star of Elementals and a mixed Nova of either 'Mechs and Elementals of 'Mechs and aerospace fighters.
Ghost Bear training is harsh and especially physical. All warriors undergo personal combat training, and it is interesting to note that Clan Ghost Bear never adopted the aerospace pilot genotype for its pilots, instead using what other Clans would consider MechWarrior stock for that role. Many suspect the Bears made this move not only because of the famous reluctance to adopt new methods, but also because the pilot genotype makes for poor hand-to-hand combatants.
Society
Hard work and dedication are cornerstones of Ghost Bear daily life. Though these values are typical of the Clans, the Bears further reinforce them with the concept of family. A word repugnant to all other Clans, family has a unique meaning to this Clan founded by a married couple. In their years as the Ghost Bears' first Khans, Tseng and Jorgensson imparted to their initial forty warriors a sense of camaraderie and fellowship. To them, the Clan was a family, and the father was the Khan.
As the years passed, those first warriors passed this sense of pride and belonging to those under their command. The intensity of the relationship faded as the Clan grew, but the general sense remained. Ghost Bear warriors maintain tight bonds with their trothkin and starmates. True friendship among them is widespread, and some even say love is common among the ranks (although the Bears deny this).
In the civilian castes, where families are common in other Clans, the concept is far closer to the Inner Sphere norm than in other Clans. Children generally stay with their parents rather than being raised in community crèches. In most cases, this means the crèches are more like day care than permanent homes for the children, and the parents take care of their own children as much as they can while still performing their duties for the Clan.
Clan Ghost Bear has few official ceremonies or customs, instead relying on a broader spectrum of traditions that give the Clan its unique identity. Reinforced through education and the military chain of command, these characteristics make a Ghost Bear what he or she is.
The Virtue of Strength
In battle and in other endeavors, the Ghost Bears favor strength above all things: not only physical strength, but strength of purpose and character. Our strength has allowed us to prosper in spite of our often hidebound ways and chronic political naïveté. A major contributing factor in our development along these lines has been the Clan's easy access to metals and other resources since the Golden Century. With an abundance of raw materials, the Ghost Bears have had the luxury of heavier than-average 'Mech units, and so can apply force more directly than Clans such as the Wolves and Ice Hellions.
On an individual scale, each warrior's strength is also considered of primary importance. Hand to hand combat training is as intense for MechWarriors as for Elementals, and even our aerospace pilots are deadly outside the cockpit. Each year, teams from every Galaxy compete in a Clan decathlon in the tradition of the ancient Terran athletic contest. The winners of this event receive the respect of their peers and a seat at the head of the table for the feast that follows the competition.
The Clawing Ritual
Personifying the Ghost Bears' reverence for strength is the Clawing. This dangerous rite of passage is undertaken only by the bravest of Ghost Bear warriors, but those who survive it are destined to rise to the Clan's highest echelons. Only the highest-ranking un-Clawed warrior in each Cluster may participate in the annual trip to Strana Mechty. There, the Clan Loremaster leads the candidates in a month-long period of reflection and purification, reliving Tseng and Jorgensson's journey in their hearts before they attempt it with their bodies. The candidates from each Galaxy are then grouped into hunting parties and equipped with only basic equipment, including a pair of hunting dogs to aid in tracking down their elusive quarry. Armed only with a simple metal spear, the hunters embark on their journey. They go out to find a ghost bear, defeat it in combat and return its carcass to base camp as proof of their deed.
Fewer than half the hunting parties return, and fewer still return successful. There is no dishonor in failure, for the punishing Antarctic of Strana Mechty is a test of stamina few warriors outside our Clan could survive. Usually, at least one hunting party returns with a ghost bear. It is carefully skinned amid great ceremony; the pelt fashioned into cloaks for the victors. The Clans abhor waste, and so the flesh of the honored creature is roasted over a bonfire and shared among all the candidates in the hope that ingesting the ghost bear will impart some portion of its essence to them.
Haste makes Waste
The founders of Clan Ghost Bear taught their warriors that "to tread without care is to court disaster." As evidenced by their slow but steady advances in the liberation of the Pentagon, Tseng and Jorgensson believed a methodical and thorough approach was preferable to a blitzkrieg. In a similar vein, the Ghost Bears see partial commitment to a cause as worse than no commitment at all. We undertake nothing lightly, just as our founders did not join the Exodus without due consideration.
This general tendency has evolved over time into an overriding Ghost Bear philosophy. Strategically and tactically, the Bears move in measured steps. In the field of military technology, we do not rush to adopt unproven weapons, whose introduction always disrupts the rank and file. Instead, we test any new acquisition, often by observing other Clans as they employ the technology in battle. Only after a technology or tactic has proven its worth is it employed by the Ghost Bear Clan, whose warriors then embrace it wholeheartedly.
The Great Work
Among his many virtues, Khan Kilbourne Jorgensson was an exceptional sculptor and musician. Though some warriors scoff at artistic expression, throughout history many great warriors were also artists. In the courtyard outside his headquarters, Kilbourne worked on a massive life-sized statue of the ghost bear he killed during his own Clawing. He began the sculpture immediately upon his return from that rite, to create a monument to the great beast he had felled. Whenever possible, he would venture into the courtyard and work on the sculpture, refining this or that detail. One day his aide asked if he was nearly finished with the statue. The Khan responded cryptically, saying. "When I am finished, so will the statue be finished." The Khan was killed in battle later that month. The statue now stands guard over the Jorgensson Bloodname Chapel in the Svoboda Zemylya (Peace Park) on Strana Mechty.
Kilbourne Jorgensson's sculpture gave rise to the idea of creating a "Great Work" to demonstrate dedication to a long-term goal or cause. This usually takes the form of a single artistic piece: a sculpture, musical composition, painting and so forth. The Work is begun after an individual comes of age (after the Trial of Position for warriors), and is worked on throughout life -daily if possible, little by little. Such creations are never truly "finished." Like life, the Great Work is a never-ending journey. Often a Great Work is a joint effort of trothkin, especially when the effort is an especially large Work such as a monumental sculpture. This type of Great Work has even more value in some ways, as it also emphasizes teamwork.
By tradition, every warrior is expected to create a Great Work, which is performed or displayed as appropriate at the warrior's funeral ceremony. The Work is included in the warrior's codex after death, as a monument to the warrior's spirit. In the case of Bloodnamed warriors, the Work is perpetually displayed in the Svoboda Zemylya near the warrior's Bloodname Chapel.
Family Values
Hard work and dedication are cornerstones of Ghost Bear daily life. These attitudes are typical of the Clans, but the Bears further reinforce them with the concept of family. A word repugnant to all other Clans, family has a unique meaning to this Clan, founded as it was by a married couple. In their 38 years as the Clan's first Khans, Tseng and Jorgensson imparted to their warriors a unique sense of camaraderie and fellowship. As the years passed, those first warriors passed this sense of belonging to those under their command. The intensity of the relationship faded as the Clan grew, but the general sense of it remained. To this day, Ghost Bear warriors maintain tight bonds with their trothkin and Starmates, and lifelong friendships are widespread.
This gives the Ghost Bears unrivaled esprit de corps, but can sometimes prove a weakness as well. Bonds of true friendship are hard to break, and when warriors are in the field, this kind of attachment can sometimes lead them to take unwise risks on behalf of their trothkin. Though this often results in heroic feats of valor, just as often it can lead to the loss of the objective. Transfers can also be a problem, as joining a new unit means new bonds must be forged and old ones pushed aside. New units or units created from the fragments of others are often weak at first. For this reason, Ghost Bear soldiers are normally transferred between units in Star or Binary-sized groups rather than individually.
Training
Ghost Bear training is harsh and emphasizes the physical. All warriors, even aerospace pilots, undergo extensive personal combat training. Unlike many Clans, failure in the initial Trial of Position does not immediately relegate an aspiring Ghost Bear warrior to the ranks of the lower castes. Rather, the cadet is shifted to another warrior sub-caste, his or her placement based on aptitude tests, in the hopes that the cadet may test out more positively there. This system avoids wasting the cadet's early training. If a warrior fails to earn a position in the sub-caste, he is then sent to the lower castes, as it is also wasteful to continue training a poor candidate.

| Clan Ghost Bear History
Brief History
The Ghost Bears are the only Clan to be founded by a married couple, and it almost did not happen. Hans Jorgensson and Sandra Tseng and Jorgensson agreed that they would rather die together than live apart, and so they set out on a journey into the Antarctic of Strana Mechty.
Their journey became the stuff of legends when a family of ghost bears reportedly saved them from death by starvation and exposure. Regaining their strength, they returned to the Clans. The solidarity shown by Tseng and Jorgensson so impressed Nicholas that he let them stay together as Khans of the Ghost Bear Clan.
The Ghost Bears thrived in the Golden Century, but their cautious attitudes kept them from standing out. The Clans' main advancements were industrial; the asteroid-mining techniques they developed during this time gave them a distinct edge in production.
When Operation Revival began, the Ghost Bears earned a place in the initial invasion force, attacking the Draconis Combine and Free Rasalhague Republic corridor. Easy victories in the Periphery and early encounters with Rasalhague troops lulled the Bear Khan into a false sense of security. Together with a lack of sufficient supplies, this resulted in a poor showing for the Bears through the first two waves of the operation.
The turning point was the death of Khan Theresa DelViller. The Clan's dynamic Oathmaster, Aletha Kabrinski, succeeded her and immediately called for the removal of the Clan's other Khan, citing poor performance in the invasion to date. Kabrinski nominated Bjorn Jorgensson, who handily defeated the sitting Khan to take over command of the Clan. Jorgensson and Kabrinski immediately initiated sweeping reforms, putting the Clan back on track, and their performance in the later stages of the invasion was impressive. On Tukayyid, they managed to take one of their objectives, while all other Clans but Wolf and Jade Falcon failed to achieve any sort of victory.
In the years following Tukayyid, the Bears moved to solidify their position in the Inner Sphere. Known for treating their civilians well, the Bears continued that course, working closely with local governments to keep the population as content as possible under their new leadership. Ambitious industrial expansion projects were wide spread, keeping employment rates up and enhancing the Bear Touman in the process.
The Ghost Bears were so successful in their Occupation Zone that Khan Jorgensson proposed a bold plan: to move the entire Clan permanently into the Inner Sphere, streamlining supply and manufacturing and strengthening the Clan. Putting the matter to a vote of the entire Warrior caste, as are all important matters that concern all Ghost Bear castes, the Clan voted to move. Although relocating from Clan space was not in violation of any Clan laws or traditions, the move was conducted in secrecy to prevent undue predation against Ghost Bear holdings or vessels during the relocation.
The return to the Inner Sphere began in early 3055, and by mid-3059 was nearly complete. A pair of massive Leviathan-class Warships transported huge numbers of civilians in secret. Each had the appearance of a fearsome battlecruiser, but was actually a large-scale armored transport. Each Leviathan can transport more than a quarter of a million passengers, plus supplies and prefabricated settlements. Supposedly patrolling the Clan's Deep Periphery supply lines, they were in fact moving millions of Ghost Bear Civilians to the Inner Sphere.
The capture and adoption by Clan Ghost Bear of Ragnar Magnusson, Prince of Rasalhague and former warrior of Clan Wolf, put the seal on the Ghost Bears' relocation. Currently a Star Colonel in the Bear Touman, his presence legitimized the Bears' claim to their Inner Sphere possessions, and it seems likely that Ragnar will eventually be elevated to a high position within the Clan.
Beginnings
The Ghost Bears have the distinction of being the only Clan formed by a husband and wife. Hans Jorgennson and Sandra Tseng helped found the Bears after ilKhan Nicholas Kerensky rescinded an order forbidding marriage. The two fostered many Ghost Bear traditions, but most importantly, they imbued a strong sense of family to the Clan. Few Clans have as high a regard for all caste members as the Ghost Bears.
Their family strength, however, has cost the Ghost Bears dearly in the past. Their thoughtfulness and unwillingness to rush into new things has prevented them from being on the leading edge of many new technologies. The Ghost Bears were amongst the last Clans to adopt OmniMechs, a decision which cost them several key genetic legacies, cities and bases. In spite of this, the Bears are highly resourceful and flexible in their combat training. Many others have noted that their combat techniques resemble those of the Wolves and the Inner Sphere.
Dragoon Compromise
In 3003, Ghost Bear Khan Nadia Winson, a staunch Crusader, pushed the issue of invasion in the Grand Council. Although Crusader sentiment ran high in the Council, Wolf Khan Kherlin Ward proposal to send a reconnaissance force in first won over the Council instead. The debate concerning the size and composition of the unit continued until it was decided that a multi-regiment expeditionary force would be sent in. Many Khans wanted to send an all-trueborn force, but others did not send such a large number of their elite warriors into battle at that time. Eventually, it was decided that the regiments would be comprised of talented freeborns and a few trueborns. Leading the force would be two Wolf warriors, Jaime and Joshua Wolf. Amongst the few trueborns in the force was a young and fiesty Natasha Kerensky. Thus, was created Wolf's Dragoons.
For twenty years, Wolf's Dragoons sent back reports that shocked the Clans. The information obtained by the Dragoon's that, in many cases, the Clans' belief about the collapse had come true. What was even more disturbing were reports that the Successor States were on the road to recovery. It was during the mid-3020's that the Dragoons stopped sending reports. Evidence began to mount against the Dragoons - stating that the Wolf forces had changed sides and given their loyalty over to the Inner Sphere.
In 3048, the Outbound Light, a ComStar Explorer Corps jumpship, strayed into Smoke Jaguar territory and was swiftly captured. Jaguar Khan Leo Showers had the crew interrogated. He then presented the information gleaned from the crew and convinced the Grand Kuraltai that the Inner Sphere was on the verge of discovering the Clans.
The Ghost Bears were amongst the Clans who battled Clan Wolf in a Trial of Refusal for the invasion. The Wolves eventually lost the battle but not before killing both Ghost Bear Khans. Given the momentous events occurring, the Ghost Bear warriors used the opportunity to elect new Khans. Breaking with tradition, the Bears opted to elect Khans from outside the Tseng and Jorgensson Blood Houses. They chose Karl Bourjon and Theresa DelVillar to become Khan and saKhan, respectively.
The Bears survived the first round of bidding for a place in the invasion by dropping their bid from twelve frontline Galaxies to just three. The Third Bear Guards won the Clan the Draconis Combine/Free Rasalhague Republic corridor. Though not as prestigious as the other corridors, the Ghost Bears were nonetheless ecstatic over returning to the Inner Sphere.
The Ghost Bears were eager participants in the early stages of the invasion. Their leaders quickly dismissed reports from Clan Wolf that the Inner Sphere forces were more formidable than they appeared.
The Bear Khans soon realized that the Wolves had been right in their assessment of Inner Sphere forces. Although the Bears won every world they invaded, the cost was always much higher than anticipated. The Free Rasalhague and Draconis Combine troops made every battle a costly victory. Additionally, partisan groups caused considerable amounts of damage as they fought back with guerilla tactics.
In an effort to slow down Clan Wolf's advance, ilKhan Leo Showers convinced Khans Bourjon and DelVillar to make a bid for the right to assault Rasalhague, the capital world of the Free Rasalhague Republic. However, during the Bears' assault on Last Frontier, saKhan DelVillar was severely injured and left comatose. Khan Bourjon secured Last Frontier and immediately convened a meeting of all available Bloodnamed warriors to elect a new saKhan. Aletha Kabrinski, the current Oathmaster, won the title against stiff odds. Her first act as saKhan caused another change within the Clan. Citing Khan Bourjon's lack of leadership skills, saKhan Kabrinski called for one of the assembled Bloodnamed to challenge the Khan. Star Colonel Bjorn Jorgensson was selected and defeated Khan Bourjon in a one-sided battle in the tropical jungles of Last Frontier's equatorial region.
Together, Khans Jorgensson and Kabrinski carried on with the Clan's plan to bid for Rasalhague. The bidding for Rasalhague has been cited as a classic example of how the bidding system should work. The Ghost Bears lost the invasion rights, but left the Wolves with only three Clusters to assault the planet. They were later chagrined to hear that the Wolves were able to conquer Rasalhague without resorting to breaking their bid.
The Ghost Bears continued their wave of conquest, assimilating many new worlds in both the Free Rasalhague Republic and the Draconis Combine. Their rate of advance lagged behind the other Clans, however, and the Khans were forced to contract forces from Clan Steel Viper to help defeat the many guerilla forces on their worlds.
In late 3050, the Ghost Bear Khans received a summons from ilKhan Leo Showers. All available Khans were to rendezvous aboard the Clan Wolf flagship, the Dire Wolf, at Radstadt to convene a Grand Kurultai. When Khans Jorgensson and Kabrinski arrived, though, they found chaos. A Free Rasalhague military convoy appeared at the same time the Wolves were launching their attack on Radstadt. The aerospace fighters from the FRR convoy launched an immediate, surprise attack on the Wolf warship, the Dire Wolf. In the resulting battle, the FRR forces were driven off, but at great cost to the Clans. ilKhan Leo Showers and many others were killed when a Rasalhague pilot rammed her Shilone into the Dire Wolf's bridge.
The Bloodnamed of the Clans returned to Strana Mechty to elect a new ilKhan and settle a few scores. At first, the Crusader Khans tried to put Wolf Khan Ulric Kerensky for unClan-like behavior, but the testimony of several Bloodnamed warriors caused the charges to be summarily dismissed. The Crusaders got their revenge when they forced the election of Khan Kerensky to the post of ilKhan. Though he had been pushed into the role, Khan Kerensky proved more capable an opponent than the Crusaders had ever imagined.
ilKhan Kerensky ordered the Nova Cats to join forces with the Smoke Jaguars and the Steel Vipers to work with the Jade Falcons. Khans Jorgensson and Kabrinski were relieved that they were not forced to share their corridor with another Clan. The Steel Vipers and Jade Falcons had long hated each other and that spilled over into the Trials of Possession for worlds the Vipers needed to stage their operations from. The Nova Cats and Smoke Jaguars likewise reviled each other, but the Khans came to an early understanding to avoid unnecessary bloodshed.
The battle of Tukayyid was one of the few bright spots in the Ghost Bears Inner Sphere campaign. The Bears battled for target cities of Spanac and Luk, opposed by the Com Guards' First Army and the reserve Fourth Army. The ComGuard commander erred and only committed the veteran First Army against the full might of the Ghost Bear assault. The Bears' Alpha Galaxy managed to capture Spanac but Beta and Gamma Galaxies were unable to seize control of Luk. The two Galaxies were forced to retreat back to Spanac even as the Fourth Army moved in to recapture Spanac. Alpha Galaxy ravaged the unit and nearly destroyed the unit when the remains of Beta and Gamma Galaxy returned to Spanac. Shortly afterwards, the ilKhan and Precentor Martial agreed to end hostilities. The Ghost Bears were given a marginal victory with the capture of Spanac.
Post-Tukayyid
Unfortunately for the Inner Sphere, the Ghost Bears have undergone little of the turmoil that has plagued other Clans since the Truce of Tukayyid was signed. Aside from a few minor raids by the Smoke Jaguars and Nova Cats, the Ghost Bears forces have been pretty much unmolested. Even the Draconis Combine stages few raids against the Bears occupation zone.
The recent Inner Sphere invasion has put all Ghost Bear Clusters in the occupation zone on a higher readiness status. Though the SLDF has made no move yet to attack, the Ghost Bear Khans are well aware of what a concerted Inner Sphere attack could to their forces.
Death of a Clan
With the defeat of the Smoke Jaguars in the Inner Sphere and on Huntress, the Clans found themselves with the unprecedented prospect of an Inner Sphere invasion of Strana Mechty. The Star League Defense Force soon challenged the Clans to a Trial of Refusal over the invasion. If the Inner Sphere won, the invasion was over and the invading Clans would retain the worlds they had conquered. If the Clans won, the invasion would resume. In a surprising move, however, the Ghost Bears switched their allegiance to the Warden faction. After much deliberation, the Clan had decided that continued hostilities with the Inner Sphere was fruitless and doomed to failure.
The Ghost Bear Khans were relieved when the SLDF troops won the Trial of Refusal. Though Clan Wolf declared itself independent of the Trial verdict, Wolf Khan Vlad Ward stated his intentions of conquering Terra when the time was right.
The transition of the Ghost Bears over to the Warden faction drastically altered the power structure of the Clans. The Ghost Bears are the mightiest of the invading Clans. Only the Jade Falcons have the strength to stand against the Ghost Bears, but recent events precipitated by the Steel Vipers may change things once again.

Ghost Bear warriors undergoing The Clawing are suddenly
confronted by their fearsome quarry.
|
|
-- From the ritual words spoken by the Clan Ghost Bear Loremaster on the eve of the Clawing ritual: |
The white seems to stretch away forever. Only the distant mountains rising majestically into the blue skies interrupt the scenery. Though they seem close enough to reach in the journey of an hour or two, one could trek for many days without reaching their mist-shrouded foothills. These plains and mountains give a home to our namesake. The mighty ghost bear presides over Strana Mechty's southernmost continent. To even catch a glimpse of the bear, you must travel the open expanse of snow for many days, always moving toward the mountains. It is when you feel ready to turn back to the comfort of your base camp, exhausted and defeated, that you will realize that you are not alone. A palpable presence makes the bile rise in your throat, so thick you nearly choke on it. Yet your eyes, your window to the real world, see nothing.
Suddenly, you focus on movement: a white-cloaked lynx bounds across the tundra, its paws digging gaping wounds in the snow as it accelerates. As the cat passes through your field of vision, the ground directly in front of you erupts in a living cloud of snow that leaps after the running lynx. You stare, and you realize that the cloud of snow swirls around your namesake, the legendary ghost bear. Though you do not understand how this huge beast remained invisible, you cannot deny that only moment ago you saw no living thing. As the bear gives chase, snow sloughs off its back, revealing massively muscled flanks covered in pure white fur. The hapless lynx turns and twists in a vain attempt to throw its pursuer off the chase, but the hunter will not be denied. You stare, transfixed by the spectacle. The bear lunge through the heavy layers of snow as easily as a fish swimming through water. Its howl assaults your ears, terrifying and hauntingly sweet all at once. The bear's deadly claws glint in the morning light as its paw, large as your head, smashes into the frantic cat at blinding speed. Crimson stains the pristine white carpet, and the lynx goes down surrounded by a cloud of steam. The giant beast moves in for the feast, and still you stand and stare. The ghost bear remains unaware of your presence, and you watch it gulp down huge mouthfuls of raw meat.
The battle took only a few, scant seconds, yet every detail burns with a distinct light in your mind. You pray that you are as efficient when it falls to you to be the hunter...

| Title: Khan |
|
|
|
Bred in a MechWarrior sibko, the man who would become the Khan of the Ghost Bears failed his initial Trial of Position. Tests showed aptitude for aerospace piloting, and so he was transferred to that division according to Ghost Bear custom for trueborns. He passed his second Trial of Position with flair, scoring three kills and earning the inital rank of Star Captain. An exceptional pilot, he is also a skilled field commander, thanks in part to his early training as a MechWarrior, which gives him a better understanding of all the forces under his command. Bjorn served with distinction in the 140th STriker Cluster during the first waves of the Inner Sphere invasion; he earned the rank of Star Colonel shortly before becoming Khan.
Khan Jorgensson is large and muscular, especially compared to aerospace pilot from other Clans, and is said to pilot a Kirghiz because it is the only fighter large enough to accomodate him. He is generally soft-spoken, letting saKhan Kabrinski do most of the aggressive talking in Council. The saKhan often takes the role of field commander, leaving Jorgensson to act as a strategist.

|
Aletha Kabrinski is an aggressive light 'Mech pilot who has never let a lackluster posting get in the way of her meteoric rise to command. She prefers the speed and agility of the Fire Moth to the sheer firepower of other designs. Originally somewhat Crusader in her view, she has become a conservative Warden since Tukayyid. However, she remains aggressive, making her the perfect foil to the staid Jorgensson in the Grand Council. She is also a natural tactician and a highly skilled MechWarrior. Some say she must have Goliath Scorpion blood in her somewhere, for she revels in the "skillfull kill" so much prized by that Clan.
|
Laurie Tseng
Loremaster, Clan Ghost Bear
The commander of Beta Galaxy. Laurie Tseng is more typical of a Ghost Bear warrior than either of her ristar Khans. Earning only a single kill in her initial Trial of Position, she worked her way up to Galaxy command through slow and steady advancement. She is the oldest Ghost Bear MechWarrior in front-line duty, but shows no signs of retiring to the solahma ranks any time soon. Laurie is a shrewd strategist and an able pilot, though some question her field command abilities. She served as Loremaster throughout Operation Revival and the Great Refusal, and so possesses invaluable insight into the Inner Sphere and the Ghost Bears' interaction with it. It is widely expected that when Kael Pershaw finally gives up his tenuous grip on life, Laurie Tseng will succeed him as the next Loremaster of the Clans.

Ragnar
Star Colonel, Clan Ghost Bear
The man formerly known as Ragnar Magnusson, son of Elected Prince Haakon Magnusson of the Free Rasalhague Republic, was captured as a bondsman from the Wolves (in Exile) during a Wolf raid on the planet Utrecht. He possesses useful insight into the hearts and minds of the people of Rasalhague. Since his capture. his return to warrior status has be outstandingly fast, thanks to his impressive skills as a MechWarrior and a wisdom beyond his years. He has served as an advisor to Ulric Kerensky, Phelan Kell, Anastasius Focht and Victor Steiner-Davion. He now serves the Ghost Bear Khans as an advisor regarding the captured people of Rasalhague and as Star Colonel of Alpha Galaxy's First Rasalhague Bears Cluster.
