BOLO MK XXX (Magnificent)

Introduced on the eve of the Human-Melconian "Last War," the Mark XX was the direct descendant of the Mark XXVIII. The incorporation of counter-grav into the Mark XXX's suspension and power train went far towards offsetting the mobility penalties increasing weight had onflicted on preceding generations. The Mark XXX incorporated still further improvements to the hyper-heuristic capabilites of the Marks XXVII-XXIX, new dual-ply battle screen (which was not only more effective against kinetic weapons but also capable of absorbing energy weapon and diverting it to the Bolo's use), and a new and improved cold-fusion power plant. Weight dropped from the Mark XXIX's 24,00 tons to 17, 000 and normal speed increased to 115kph. For very short intervals, the Mark XXX could divert sufficient power to its counter-grav units to achieve actual free flight at velocities up to 500kph, but could not operate its battle screen or internal disrupter shields or fire its main armament while doing so.

  • counter-grav assist
  • dual-ply battle screen
  • Some BOLO MK XXX units:

Bolo Mark XXX, Combat Unit "Maldon", 3rd Battalion, Dinochrome Brigade; Maldon had been on reserve status while battle against the Anceti progressed. Later, as the battle became worse, he was sent to take the place of an injured Mark XXX named Saratoga to back up the human forces that were being decimated while trying to take out an Anceti 'research station'. Like everyone else who engaged the alien facility before them, Maldon was perplexed by the lack of identifiable weapon hardpoints, stations or platforms, and the absence of evidence of damage that it should have received after being inflicted upon it. With each salvo he fired, eventually the same type of weaponry as his, not firepower of alien design would rain back at him. He tried salvo after salvo and different distances. Eventually he began to formulate out something about the station's trick: that the aliens were somehow collecting his fire and later sending his own shots back on him. Maldon reflected upon a distrought human officer's hunch that he had listened to back home a few hours ago when the man had entered the communal Bolo hangar that Maldon and some fellow Bolos were resting within: the man said that he believed that the Anceti could not have been reduced low technology, that their technology was just different, and that they probably had some sort of time travel technology. Initially Maldon could concieve no idea about what could be done regarding the situation. Then Maldon concluded that the facility probably could not handle a close range nuclear explosion. Heavily damaged from his own attacks redirected back upon him from the station, he rushed in at the afflicted best he could toward the 'research station' and exploded his powerplant's fusion reactor from a good close proximity in hopes his own suicide up close would ovrwolm and destroy the up to now unstoppable enemy.

Bolo Mark XXX, Combat Unit "Saratoga", Dinochrome Brigade; Unit Saratoga was fighting in the main battle against the Anceti, and took damage to his treads. He was sent back for repair, while Unit Maldon was sent out to replace him in the battlefield.

Bolo Mark XXX, Combat Unit KCC-549 "Casey"; Commander: Brigadeer General Alan Damien; Casey was Grandbolo and the flagship of the regiment. He was a very experienced veteran with many battle honors. On Newterra-G Casey engaged in combat against invading Djanni octopods, and was confident that he could manage the fight well. He detected a white range laser flashed at him by an enemy, but denounced it as non threatening and went on fighting. More of the quick octopods approached, and Casey realized the enemy threat was now more critical, and called for backup from NTN-198 and GRT-263. Then Casey decided to go to full alert status, and right then Casey suddenly stopped and lost all functioning or responsiveness. Buried inside a now nonfunctional Bolo, Casey's crew which comprised of his General Damien and his wife as passenger, were unable to help themselves. KCC-549 and his crew were destroyed under heavy fire punishment from many Djanni octopods. For some time, no one but the enemy would know what caused this disaster, and that it was a virus directed via the seemingly innocent light beam that infected and obstructed Casey's mind.

Bolo Mark XXX, Combat Unit NTN-198; NTN-198 was positioned to defend Newterra-G. Unit NTN-198 fought Djanni octopods when called for backup from unit KCC-549 "Casey"; suffered the same fate as KCC-549 Casey.

Bolo Mark XXX, Combat Unit GRT-263; GRT-263 was positioned to defend Newterra-G; Unit GRT-263 fought Djanni octopods when called for backup from unit KCC-549 "Casey"; suffered the same fate as KCC-549 Casey.

Bolo Mark XXX, Research Unit MXM-823 "Max"; Unit Max developed empathic psychotronics; Max was the original AI for the hull of Mark XXX unit MXM-823. Unit Max was assembled successfully, but in the initial simulation scenarios to mock combat test his AI abilities, he critically failed to react correctly to battle events, mainly in situations relating to the emotional overtones from human verbal communications he received, which caused him to hesitate or be indecisive in his reactions. Psychotronics expert Captain Benazir 'Benzi' Ali recognized that Max's delayed reactions were resulting from confusion in response to emotions conveyed from humans. Max's artificial intelligence system was extracted from his hull, which would eventually be given to a younger AI, who could succeed all its required testing. Max's psychotronic mind was to be relegated for destruction, but Captain Ali did not want that to happen, and she requested to study the AI, and she was eventually granted it. Connected to Captain Ali's personal computer, Max tried to help her find out the cause of Bolo malfunctions whenever they engaged the Djanni in combat. Most of his attempts were to no avail, until Captain Ali had him compare himself against Djann virus-affected Bolos. He discovered the coding string that caused the infection in Bolo unit JNC-147. The virus string was received by Bolos through a beam of white light directed at them, which then attached itself to Bolo communication packets, and then was sent on along from Bolo to Bolo infecting more and more of them as they communicated. Later on, the psychotronicists were able to find a way to counter the infection, liberate the surviving Bolos, and send them against the Djanni forces. Max and Captain Ali were credited for the discovery.

Bolo Mark XXX, Combat Unit RGG-134; Unit RGG-134 among 119 Bolos defending Balzera Base; RGG-134 was on duty near a population center. RGG-134 was winging with TMY-919 as they were sent to support 32 Bolos battling against Djanni to defend people that were under attack. While watching the progreeing fight, RGG-134 noticed that those Bolos battling were successively losing intelligibility of communication, and battle functionality. Eventually RGG-134 was also affected by the Djanni virus, and defeated by them.

Bolo Mark XXX, Combat Unit TMM-144; Unit TMM-144 was among 119 Bolos defending Balzera Base; TMM-144 was affected by the Djanni virus, and defeated by the Djanni.

Bolo Mark XXX, Combat Unit YND-788; Unit YND-788 was among 119 Bolos defending Balzera Base; YND-788 was affected by the Djanni virus, and defeated by the Djanni.

Bolo Mark XXX, Combat Unit TMY-919; Unit TMY-919 was among 119 Bolos defending Balzera Base; TMY-919 winged with RGG-134 as they were sent to support 32 Bolos battling to defend people under attack; TMY-919 became affected by the Djanni virus, and was defeated by the Djanni.

Bolo Mark XXX, Combat Unit TMY-929; Unit TMY-929 was among 119 Bolos defending Balzera Base; TMY-929 was the leader among the 32 Bolos sent to fight Djanni attackers; TMY-929 was taken over by the Djanni virus, and defeated.

Bolo Mark XXX, Combat Unit RWQ-347; Unit RWQ-347 was among 119 Bolos defending Balzera Base; RWQ-347 took command after TMY-929 lost functionality by the Djann virus.

Bolo Mark XXX, Combat Unit AML-945; Unit AML-945 was among 119 Bolos defending Balzera Base; after succumbing to the Djanni virus, AML-145 wandered out of control and nearly collided with RGG-134.

Bolo Mark XXX, Combat Unit LIS-668 "Luis"; Unit LIS-668 was among 64 Bolos moved to SMBC Moon maintenence bay; He was one of the 27 Bolos that successfully had manual override installed in time before the Djanni attacked. In the event that Luis lost control, he was given a crewman, Private Felding, to be sent along so he could would be able to take the reigns in case Luis lost control. Luis and Private Felding were sent to fight the Djanni attacking. Luis began combating the Djanni, but as soon as he went into the highest level battle mode, he lost control. Private Felding took over and fought on until the steering somehow broke and he lost directional control and to his horror the unguided, mind voided Luis began to run over infantry.

Bolo Mark XXX, Combat Unit TRN-776; Unit TRN-776 was a Bolo that unit LIS-668 "Luis" tried to summon for aid just before he was overwelmed by the virus going into affect.

Bolo Mark XXX, Combat Unit DNA-864; DNA-864 was a Bolo unit that LIS-668 Luis tried to summon for aid just before he was overwelmed by the virus going into affect.

Bolo Mark XXX, Combat Unit JNC-147 "Janice"; Unit JNC-147 was among 64 Bolos removed from the losing battle and sent to SMBC Moon maintenence bay for research into what was causing Bolos to fail and lose all mental capacity and control in battle. Psychotronics doctor Captain Benazir Ali had the combat defunct Bolo AI named Max compare himself to the virus infected JNC-147. Having been removed from his hull and interaction with other Bolo AIs and now connected to the doctor's computer, he had not been affected by whatever was reaking havoc on other Bolos. Max identified the virus string that attached itself to inter-Bolo communication packets. The virus took affect on Bolos in the combat zone as soon as they went into highest level alert status. When Max and Ali finally figured out the what exactly the virus was, the Djanni had already been in progress attacking SMBC Moon and had taken out many Bolos and human forces that were trying with futility to defend it. Once the virus code was found, a way to countermand it was set into progress. As the Djanni octopods began to penetrate into the SMBC facility, unit JNC-147 Janice who was now 'virus-cured' sat in a corridor and waited, acting malfunctional, pretending to still be suffering from the typical virus affects. The octopods rushed in believing she was nonfunctional and headed to a doorway to seek deeper into the complex. Janice slowly rotated, aimed, then fired her Hellbore on the crowded up group of Djanni octopods.
